Finish Fetish

This film and installation was created in response to a poetic-mode documentary collaborative project about the 1960s California Light & Space art movement. Finish Fetish refers to the slang name given to the movement by the art establishment, who felt the artists were overly influenced by the glossy surfaces of newly commercialised plastics.

The same lustrous materials were used to build vivid colour-fields which leave an afterimage on the gazing eye. This creates a unique personal experience, reminiscent of the Ganzfeld effect (Ganzfeld, 1930), a phenomenon of visual stimulation thought to create an altered state of consciousness. The work becomes a presence which affects the viewer’s awareness of their own presence in the world.
